Practical Solutions

I am absolutely committed to achieving the best possible practical outcome for each of my clients.

I am pragmatic about obtaining solutions for clients which meet their needs, and I am creative in overcoming points of dispute. My advice is always commercially-minded and realistic.

Unlike many lawyers, I keep my overheads very low, and this enables me to provide very high quality services at a fraction of the cost of City firms. All my cases are handled entirely by me personally and I do not delegate work other than when this is agreed in advance with the client.

Instruction & Clients

I accept instructions from solicitors throughout the UK as well as from patent and trade mark Attorneys.

I am also a registered public access barrister, which means you can get in touch direct if you are a business or an individual.

I represent clients in the UK Intellectual Property Office as well as the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court, the High Court and Appeal Courts.

Legal Writing

Every month I write the Intellectual Property section for the Law Brief Update online newsletter for lawyers (since 2005)

I have previously undertaken a comprehensive review of the Trade Marks section of Butterworth’s Encyclopaedia of Forms and Precedents.

I have made several contributions to the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys Review and have also contributed to the European Communites Trade Mark Association Gazette. I have delivered talks to the institute of Trade Mark Attorneys, as well as to several solicitors firms and specialist legal conferences.

Practice Areas

I can help you with any intellectual property issue, which is to say anything relating to:

  • Trade marks
  • Passing off
  • Copyright
  • Design rights
  • Patents
  • Database rights
  • Trade secrets and confidential information
  • Commercial or contractual cases relating to technical subject matter
  • Sports, media and entertainment

Direct Access

Prior to July 2004 anyone wishing to instruct a barrister would first have to employ a solicitor. The law has now changed allowing direct access to barristers.

I regularly help and advise individuals and companies direct, and am registered under the Bar's Public Access scheme.

Many small businesses (and larger ones) find this an extremely cost effective and efficient way to get high quality specialist legal services, without the added expense of employing a solicitors firm.

You can read more about Public Access here.

Fees and Terms

I operate on a very high efficiency and low overheads basis, which means that fees are extremely competitive, and that clients pay for expert advice, assistance and representation, and not for expensive offices.

I will usually be able to work to a pre-agreed fixed fee for each stage or item of work, so that there are no surprises.

My work is carried out under the Bar Council approved Standard Contractual Terms unless otherwise agreed.
